Runway
There are two runways at Almaty International Airport.
On December 19, 2011, Almaty International Airport put into operation the lighting equipment meeting the requirement of the ICAO III B
and ensuring the taking-off, landing, and taxiing of aircraft in visibility less than 200 m, but not less than 75 m.
Today Almaty Internationally Airport is the first and the only one airport in the CIS having the category III B.
Installation of the lighting equipment was conducted by ВEI Electro LLP having an extensive experience and technical means for execution
of such types of work. In addition, more than 170 deepened lights, more than 60 000 meters of airfield cable, 6 light intensity controllers,
16 airfield signs, and more than 170 transformers for the deepened lights were installed so that the lighting equipment could meet the III B
requirements.
24 to 30 of November, 2011, experts from Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) and Civil Aviation Committee of the Ministry of Transport and
Communications of the Republic of Kazakhstan were certifying the aerodrome for compliance with ICAO CAT III B Weather Minima.
On December 8, 2011, Valery Nikolayevich Goncharov, Chairman of the Commission on certification of airdromes and equipment
of the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) presented a Certificate of Category III B to Aibol Anuarovich Bekmukhambetov, President of AIA JSC.
A certificate of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the RK was presented by Beken Kanelovich Seidakhmetov, acting Chairman of the
Civil Aviation Committee.
FYI: In 1998, for the safe landing of airplanes, Almaty airport reconstructed the runway which at that time was equipped with the latest technical
means meeting the ICAO international standards.
After reconstruction and certification of the runway, Almaty airport was awarded with the II category and the status of an International Airport.
In the same 1998, Almaty airport installed new ABB lighting equipment for aircraft taking-off and landing which enabled aircraft to land, taxi
and take-off as per QMS-232 ICAO Category II B Weather Minima, and QMS-52 ICAO Category I Weather Minima.
The lighting equipment for aircraft taking-off, taxiing, and landing, and the power supply system for the airport and its facilities meet all
ICAO requirements in full. Runway dimensions: length – 4,400 meters, width: 60 meters.
In September 2008, experts from the Interstate Aviation Committee inspected Almaty aerodrome for compliance with aviation rules, and issued a
Certificate of ICAO Category III A.
