November 15, 2008

Almaty.
November 15. Kazinform
(Daniyar Sikhimbayev) Today
President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has visited
"Almaty International Airport"
where he surveyed the second runway built recently, Kazinform
correspondent reports.
As
is known, the first runway was built there 40 years ago. In
connection with growth of intensity of flights and acceptance of
heavy trans-Atlantic aircrafts construction of a new runway was
needed. Preparation works on its construction were started by
“Aeroproject” Moscow Institute and its affiliate “Kazaeroproject” in
1992. But due to the USSR collapse, lack of funds and other
objective reasons the work was frozen.
Construction of the second runway that is 4.5 km long and 60 m wide
was started in 2007 and completed in August of the current year. The
total cost of the project is more than USD 87 mln.
The President also got familiarized himself with a project of a new
terminal with capacity of up to 1800 passengers per hour
