Almaty Airport’s work results for 2011

In 2011, Almaty International Airport JSC handled 3 million 665 thousand and 538 passengers, including 1 830 297 arriving passengers, and
1 835 241 departing passengers. Growth of passenger traffic is 119% (3 077 615 passengers) in comparison with the year 2010.
For the last year 49 135 flights were handled, including 24 559 departing flights, and 24 576 arriving flights. Growth in this
segment is 111% (44 221 flights) in comparison with the year 2010.
Almaty International Airport is the largest airport in Kazakhstan. The airport’s authority pays much attention to improvement
of rendered services. One of the priorities in airport development program is modernization of technical facilities and personnel
development.
In 2011, Almaty International Airport held the following modernization activities:

- In June a new container and pallet loader TREPEL CHAMP 350 (Germany)
was put into service. This model is the latest generation of 35 tn
loaders created by using all of the up-to-date functional resources and suitable with all the latest types of cargo aircrafts.
- To improve services provided to passengers and airlines, a Neoplan apron bus of latest model (9112 L) was purchased. The new bus can
carry 137 passengers at a time, has high comfort and excellent noise isolation cabin. Also the bus is equipped with portable ramps, which
is comfortable to use by wheelchairs.
- In early September the exit zone was enlarged and a new park management system Modpark by
world famous parking system manufacturer Designa-Asytec (Germany) was put into operation. The Modpark system includes entrance and exit units, automated cashier terminals,
software, video identification and recognition of vehicle registration number subsystems (VISPA), and video surveillance.
After expansion and installation of new equipment, there are 11 points at the entrance unit: 4 points are for entrance, and 7 ones are for
exit from the airport.
- In December, 2011, the lighting equipment meeting the requirement of
the ICAO III B and ensuring the taking-off, landing, and taxiing of
aircraft in visibility less than 200 m, but not less than 75, was put into operation. Earlier Almaty Airport’s lighting equipment system met
the requirements of the ICAO CAT III A which ensured precision approach when the runway visibility was more than 200 meters. In 2010, 66 flights
were diverted to alternate aerodromes because of the heavy fog. After implementation of the category III B, number of flights, which could not
land due to bad weather, will significantly be decreased.
It is worth noting that today Almaty Internationally Airport is the first and the only one airport in the CIS having the category III B.
- In December, Almaty International Airport was the first one in Kazakhstan obtained a certificate of the European Aviation Safety Agency
(EASA) for line maintenance of Boeing 747-400 and Airbus À318/À319/À320/À321.
The certificate enables airport specialists to perform line maintenance of aircraft registered in Europe, including service maintenance,
external inspection of aircraft, defect elimination, and unit replacement as well. Earlier the airport had the right to perform service
maintenance of Boeing 747-400 and Airbus À318/À319/À320/À321 only, including aircraft marshalling, adjustment of chocks, filling of water systems,
internal cleaning of cabins, and aircraft deicing operations during winter periods. If there was a need to eliminate any malfunction of aircraft,
airlines had to involve their own specialists, which led to long delays and financial losses, or they had to have technical staff on board,
which was unprofitable for any airline.
FYI: Approximately 90% of all-cargo operations to Almaty International Airport are now performed on Boeing 747-400, and more than half of
passenger flights are performed on Airbus À318/À319/À320/À321.
- Almaty International Airport has entered into a five-year contract with SITA for purchase and maintenance of ComNet FIDS, AirportConnect CUTE,
and Maestro DCS Local equipment.
Thanks to the new equipment the passenger handling system at Almaty airport will be brought to the whole new level. So, the FIDS system
enables to react faster to any changes in flight schedule, and immediately display such information on LC-displays located in the terminal.
The previous equipment was installed in the airport in December 2003, and since that time hardware and software components became outdated
and did not meet the up-to-date requirements. Furthermore, new LCDs are much lighter in weight, more energy-efficient, and they have sharper
images in comparison with old plasma panels. And thanks to the latest technologies, passengers who do not have a baggage can check-in by
themselves via Internet or special counters and then go to gates.
The new equipment is implemented step-by-step in order to avoid any problems in work of airport services. At this moment monitors are changed
and new printers are installed in the airport. The equipment of ComNet FIDS, AirportConnect CUTE, and Maestro DCS Local will be installed
entirely at Almaty International Airport in the first half of 2012.
